Matching Reading Data to Interventions

A Simple Tool for Elementary Educators

By: Jana Schmidt and Jill Dunlap Brown

So much data! How do I analyze the literacy data I have? Which intervention addresses each child’s specific foundational needs? Matching Reading Data to Interventions will outline how to structure a system that ensures students are receiving the intervention they require.

This reader-friendly book will help you assess and determine the strengths and deficits of each of your K – 5 students. It provides an analysis tool called “The Columns” to guide teachers from specific reading data to the correct intervention for each student. The tool can be adapted for the resources and assessments of a particular district. Different versions are available for varying grade levels. In the text you will find class and student specific examples, which can be utilized in initial data team or professional development sessions.

The book provides easy-to-use, printable versions of the data analysis columns that will enable you to put this information into immediate action. These tools are available for download on the book’s product page.

Spring Educational Consulting can assist with implementation of the ideas in this resource! Together we can review assessment, interventions, and resources your school district currently utilizes.  We can also design The Columns for your district’s specific resources, customize a plan for professional development, train staff on how to implement The Columns, and meet with grade level teams related to RTI/MTSS implementation.  All of this can be tailored to your schedule and your needs. Once systems are in place, we can offer guidance on sustainability.

Matching Reading Data to Interventions became a reality after years of working with many school districts to set up easy-to-use systems that could help students get the intervention they required.  Student growth was the result.  This ignited a passion for helping teachers gain knowledge of the process and help students advance in their literary skills.
